High Performance FAQs
Find answers to common questions we receive about our high performance timing sets and components.
Contact UsHow are high-performance timing sets different from standard replacement timing sets?
Cloyes High Performance timing sets are developed for racing, performance upgrades and high-output engine builds. Depending on the product, they may include billet steel sprockets, True® Roller or Z-Series chains, reduced-mass components and features that allow builders to adjust camshaft timing. Product construction and adjustment options vary by application.
What is the difference between Street and Race timing sets?
Street timing sets are designed for performance-oriented engines that also require dependable operation during regular driving. Race timing sets use materials and configurations intended for higher-RPM and more demanding competition environments. The right choice depends on the engine combination, operating range, intended use and camshaft requirements.
Are all Cloyes High Performance timing sets adjustable?
No. Adjustment options vary by product and application. Certain sets use multi-keyway crankshaft sprockets, while Quick Adjust and Hex-A-Just® systems provide different methods of changing camshaft timing. Always review the instructions for the specific part number before selecting a timing position or beginning installation.
What is a True Roller timing chain?
A True Roller chain uses rollers that rotate as the chain engages the sprocket teeth. Cloyes True® Roller timing sets are available in several Street, Race and billet configurations, with the chain and sprocket materials selected for the intended application.
How do I choose the right high-performance timing set?
Consider the engine application, camshaft specifications, intended RPM range, street or race use and the amount of cam timing adjustment required. Also confirm whether the engine has been modified in ways that could affect timing-set fit or center distance. Use the Cloyes Part Finder and the product-specific instructions before installation.
What should be checked when installing a performance timing set?
Confirm the selected timing position, properly degree the camshaft and check chain fit, sprocket alignment, camshaft endplay and clearance around the block and timing cover. Follow the instructions for the specific timing set and the recommendations supplied by the camshaft manufacturer.
