At Cloyes, your security is our priority. As the digital landscape evolves, so do the tactics used by scammers. We want to ensure you’re informed about the different types of online scams and how to protect yourself. Here’s what you need to know about social engineering, phishing, fraudulent phone calls, and other online scams.

Identifying Social Engineering Attacks

Social engineering attacks exploit human psychology to gain confidential information. Scammers may pose as trusted individuals or organizations to manipulate you into revealing sensitive information or performing actions that compromise your security.

Warning Signs:

Urgent Requests: Claims that you must act immediately.
Authority Figures: Impersonation of executives, IT staff, or other authority figures.
Unusual Requests: Asking for sensitive information like passwords or financial details.
Out-of-Context Communications: Unexpected messages from known contacts asking for help.

Recognizing Phishing Messages

Phishing messages are fraudulent attempts to obtain sensitive information by disguising themselves as trustworthy communications.

How to Spot a Phishing Message:

Suspicious Email Addresses: Look out for misspelled or unrecognized email addresses.
Generic Greetings: Use of generic terms like “Dear User” instead of your name.
Spelling and Grammar Errors: Phishing emails often contain noticeable errors.
Unexpected Attachments or Links: Be wary of unexpected files or links, especially if they prompt you to enter personal information.
Fake URLs: Hover over links to see if the URL matches the supposed destination. If in doubt, do not click.

Handling Fraudulent Phone Calls

Fraudulent phone calls, or vishing, involve scammers posing as legitimate entities to steal your information or money.

How to Handle Suspicious Calls:

Verify Caller Identity: Ask for the caller’s name, department, and a callback number. Verify this information independently before taking any action.
Do Not Share Sensitive Information: Never disclose personal information or passwords over the phone unless you are certain of the caller’s identity.
End Suspicious Calls: If the call feels suspicious, hang up and contact the organization directly using a verified number.

Scammers are always finding new ways to trick you online. Stay vigilant and follow these general tips to protect yourself:
